D3d8thk.dll error
In the following post I’ll walk you through a quick procedure that’ll enable you to fix the D3d8thk.dll error. I’d like to emphasize that it’s important to follow each of the steps provided here for a successful repair of this problem.

About D3d8thk.dll
Microsoft Direct3D OS Thunk Layer file – it is part of your Windows OS, usually located in the following folder: C:\Windows\System32. Basically, this dll provides support to PC games from DirectX controls that require a thunk layer. This dll enables DirectX 3D applications to use 16bit codes from a 32bit platform and vice versa. This file is critical for the proper operation of multimedia-rich applications such as PC games.

Common known problems
(1) PC games won’t open up and instead they crash.
(2) Other multimedia rich applications won’t run.
(3) Images and Videos won’t open up.

In those 3 situation you’d usually receive error messages from Windows saying that d3d8thk.dll is missing or could not be found, or that C:\Windows\System32\d3d8thk.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error, or that this dll is not a valid windows image.

The causes to this D3d8thk.dll error
(1) One or several of your display related drivers are invalid (incompatible, too old, corrupt).
(2) The dll is damaged or incompatible.

Troubleshooting guide

(1) Replace invalid display related drivers
One of your display related drivers might have gotten switched by an incorrect version; this might have happened due to a recent Windows update. Or it had just gotten damaged somehow. You need to detect those drivers and immediately replace them with their OFFICIAL, up-to-date, and compatible version.

Now before you ’burn’ at least an hour or two on trying to figure out which of your drivers are invalid, here is a little trick that enables you to detect those drivers in 1-2 minutes:

(1) Download this drivers diagnostics tool
(2) Run a drivers diagnostics scan
(3) When it completes open the Drivers report
(4) Are any of your display related drivers marked as invalid?
(5) If so, now you know which drivers require replacement

(2) Update and refresh your DirectX installation
Visit Microsoft’s site in order to download and install the latest DirectX installation (direct link) and then restart Windows.

(3) Run Windows SFC to detect and replace incompatible system files
Windows System File Checker (SFC) is already part of your Windows system. It’ll scan all your Windows system files - if it finds an incompatible or missing system file it’ll automatically replace it by a new one.

Again, restart Windows and from now on the D3d8thk.dll error should no longer show up.
